I was very intimidated the first time I walked into an organic chemistry class! I was so sure I would not be able to understand what was going on, then Dr. Loide Wasmund walked into the classroom, and my adventures in organic chemistry began!
Dr. Wasmund is a fantastic teacher and a great investigator to work for. I was a research assistant for her in the Minority Biomedical Support Program (MBRS) at Southeastern Oklahoma State University for two years. During that time, we attended many meetings and traveled to Washington DC for a Cancer Research Symposium. Our research involved peptide synthesis, and I learned many valuable techniques in her lab. I am very thankful for the opportunities and mentoring while studying with her. She is the main reason I added a Chemistry major to my undergraduate program, and I have never regretted it! Now I have a masters degree in organic. Hard to believe from my shakey beginnings!
I hope this page has some helpful information for all you struggling organic students! Hang in there...it does get better....
Educational Materials for Organic Chemistry
This page is provided by Dr. Abby Parrill, currently of Memphis State University. Excellent help in understanding different concepts of organic: stereoisomerism, reaction mechanisms, practice problems, and quicktime movies are all available here. The database is located at Michigan State.
Selected Organic Problems and Tutorials
Practice problems covering most aspects of organic chemistry. Provided by Michigan State University. These really help you to understand mechanisms and reactions step by step. Go see how you do! The main page for the MSU organic chemistry division may be reached here. They have a lot of good info on solvents and other useful information off the main site.
This is another excellent source of tutorials, practice tests, and other organic chemistry resources brought to my attention by Authur Winter of Frostburg State University. Thanks Arthur! You can even submit specific questions to the organic chemistry answer man, Artickus!
Organic Reactions with References
Need to find out about a particular reaction? If it has a name, try this place!
Beginner's Guide to Organic Synthesis
Good pages explaining some basics of organic synthesis from the Centre for Chemistry Studies at the University of Sunderland.
An online dictionary that contains quite a few terms. If you need a German dictionary or translation you might try here.
Guide to Selected Resources in Chemistry and Biochemistry
This is a great place to get information. Lots of links to publications and internet resources. Provided by Louisiana State University.
This link has examples and primary references for many famous and not so famous reactions!
Pretty nifty little periodic table here. All the information you would ever need to know about each element is provided.
The Alchemy Website and Virtual Library
This site has "80 megabytes online of information on alchemy in all its facets. Divided into over 1300 sections and providing tens of thousands of pages of text, over 1700 images, over 200 complete alchemical texts, extensive bibliographical material on the printed books and manuscripts, numerous articles, introductory and general reference material on alchemy. " Alrighty then...what more could you ask for? All this info is available on a CD ROM if you want a hard copy!
Interesting.....very interesting......
WWW Virtual Library of Science - History of Chemistry
This is a good page of links to learn about the background of medicine and chemistry.
