    • LD... Learning Disability- A student with a specific learning disability is one who has a significant discrepancy between achievement (usually in reading) and ability, compared with a student of the same age, intelligence, and experience. Attention has always been used to describe pupils in the LD category.

    • LEA... Local Education Agency... Under SEA, which is under IDEA.

    • LRE... Least Restrictive Environment... Language minority students should have access to the same types of placement options as are provided for monolingual English speakers in special education. Placement in special language programs should be continuous. Failure to meet the student's language needs in special eduacation will prevent the LEP child from having FAPE. Each student must be educated, to the maximum extent appropriate (beneficial) for the student, in the school environment that is most typical. This principle presumes that education will occur in "inclusive" settings. "Inclusion- the civil rights principle is equality before the law.

    • MA... Mental Age... IQ tests ages for classification.

    • MR... (Doesn't stand for Mister!) ...Mental Retardation... The typical child with mental retardation in special education is one who performs poorly in school but who will be able to attain vocational success in the community. Requires a determination that a child have significantly subaverage intelligence. This is usually an IQ score that is more than two standard deviations below the mean.

    • Normal... the difference between normal and disordered behavior is usually one of degree.(p.25,Kaufman)
