Hair Pictures
This floral arrangement made of human hair is a perfect example of a popular nineteenth century handcraft. Some pioneers collected hair from the heads of family members for use in an artistic project to remember their loved ones by, as they headed west. The early pioneers knew they would never see their loved ones again. The hair is treated like thread in order to weave or crochet it into various designs.
This arrangment was made by a member of Mrs. Grace Bennet's family and brought from North Carolina to Fannin County in 1858.
Donated to the Fannin County Museum of History by Billie Bennet Bradford
Another way people used this art is to mourn over the dead loved ones.
This all took place in the early nineteenth century. It became popular again in the mid nineteenth century, untill about 1890. This hair came from their deceased love ones. They made many things from this hair such as, bracelets, lockets and pictures to hang on the wall. This form in the picture is a statue of some sort.
