My COMBS line really begins with Richard COMBS who was born around 1650 in England. His son Thomas COMBS was born about 1675 in Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ. Somehow he arrived in Augusta Co. Virginia where my GGGGGG-Grandfather, Robert COMBS, was born in 1704-1710. Robert's children were all born in that area, and his son Job's children were also all born in that area. Then Job's son Zur COMBS moved to Highland Co., OH between 1803 and 1808, when his last child, Eliza was born in Ohio. Zur's son, Joseph P. COMBS, did a lot of traveling in his lifetime. He was born in VA, moved with his father, Zur, to Ohio when he was between 5 and 10 years old, moved to Illinois between 1831 and 1833, and apparently moved to Texas between 1846 and 1849, moving through Dallas and settling in Alvarado. Joseph P.'s son, Zur David COMBS, then moved to Wise Co. TX between 1853 and 1855, when my G-Grandfather, Erastus Milton COMBS was 3 to 5 years old. My Grandfather, Clarence Hill COMBS, was born in Springtown, Wise Co., TX in 1886, along with his twin brother, Claude Lee COMBS, who died as an infant. My mother, Claudie Lee COMBS, was born in Springtown in 1909 and was named after my Grandfather's twin. In the fall of 1920, the COMBS CLAN moved west to Chillicothe, Hardeman Co., TX, where Mother met Dad, Lancelot Ollie JEANES, whose family had also just moved west from Blossom, Lamar Co., TX, where he was born. Mom has told me of traveling between Springtown and Chillicothe in a covered wagon, and staying in wagon yards at night. Dad told me about a cow getting loose from their farm in Chillicothe once when he was younger, and he followed her for three days before he caught her. My parents were married in 1925, and after a move to AR and back, they moved to Dallas in 1941. My Dad became a welder and worked first at Wyatt Metal & Boiler Works, where he welded torpedo tubes from the inside, and later at Potter Art Metal Studios, where he built wrought iron fixtures for businesses and residences, many in the Highland Park and University Park areas. Mom worked in downtown Dallas when they first moved here at Higginbotham- Bailey Co. making ties among other things. We lived at 2814 McKinney Ave. Then when they bought their first home at 6603 Lockheed St., she stayed home and took care of the family. After my younger brother, Lanny, started to school, she started working again at Southwestern Optical Co. She worked there until she retired. My Dad died in 1976 of lung cancer, probably because of smoking for 58 years. My Mom, Claudie Lee COMBS, is still fiddlin' around. She took violin lessons at age 75 after Dad died, and makes regular visits to the local prison with our church string band to entertain the prisoners. She is 88 years young. I was in the U.S. Navy for four years, stationed in California, Tennessee, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts during my four year stint. I made one trip to Europe on the U.S.S. Kirkpatrick, DER-318, before my enlistment expired. I was an Electronics Technician, and worked at Collins Radio Company, Rockwell, Int., and Alcatel Network Systems (all the same company, just different ownership over the years) until I retired in 1993. I have five children, two sons and three daughters. If you are a relative of mine, close or distant, or an old friend, drop me a line.
