The community that will be focused on is a museum research team in Texas.Summary of Our Project
We will examine a curious artifact discovered in London, Texas. We will also be exploring some imprints that were found in Cretaceous Limestone at Glen Rose, Texas.
1. How did your activities and research for this International School CyberFair 96 project support your required coursework and curriculum requirements?
Internet literacy and elementary HTML were required elements of our computer science curriculum this semester. Research was required using a CD-ROM dictionary and encyclopedia. Students communicated with helpers through email. Students learned to use new software tools, such as image editing tools, paint programs, HTML editors, web browsers, FTP utilities and TCP/IP modem software. It was exciting to watch a seven year old explode into creativity with a paint program (she drew some of the dinosaurs for us). Equally interesting was a primary teacher's surprised reaction to what can be done with computers and small children today.
We used a 486 based computer with Windows 3.1, a Hewlett Packard ScanJet, the telephone, a CD-ROM dictionary, and a CD-ROM encyclopedia.HTMLed was an extremely useful tool, once we finally discovered it. Also, we liked Paintbrush, LView, Deskscan, Netscape, Trumpet Winsock, and Eudora.
We communicated with email, the telephone, and in person.People were interested in our project; some didn't believe it. Many did not understand the words being used, others could not envision the project happening.
The students now understand that global communication is practical and fun.We do not yet know who has viewed our Web pages, but we have added a counter to our page. We know of at least one teacher who has been influenced favorably toward technology in the schools from our project.
We needed lots of advice for our project. We are grateful to our service provider, Internet Texoma, and to their Help Desk. Also, we appreciate help received from David Lines, our principal's husband, through email and through materials and services loaned for our use.
Our school conducts an annual field trip to the Creation Evidences Museum. One year we were allowed a hands-on examination of an artifact. Each year we are excited to meet some of the members of the museum team in person.
